Full circle and then some
Last year I wrote a blog post about a woman I met who had been out of work for six months. It ended up that she got a job because of me. Anyway, I contacted her recently to see how the job was working out and this is what she responded:
It's ironic, I was just thinking about you too but just didn't get a
chance to reach out. I was actually let go from The Job a few
weeks ago. They didn't think I was cut out for the sales business and
I agreed. I just started a new job last week though and it's
definitely a better fit for me. I'm now a compliance consultant for
one of the consulting firms. Even though it was a short period of
time, my time at The Job was definitely not a waste: I was
introduced to my current and new career path and met my new boyfriend
there as well. Overall, things are pretty good.
Thank you for thinking of me and taking the time to reach out to me.
Hope you are well too.
Wow. The world really works in strange and wonderful ways. I'm blown away that my minor intervention has led her down a new path in life.

Bunting - tick!
Christmas before last, the Boy and I hosted all of his and my (extended) family for Christmas Lunch (which ended up being dinner, more on that below). I had creative visions of us all sitting outside on the deck in the afternoon sun under rows of red and green bunting, having Christmas drinks while we digested the lunchtime feast.
Instead...
1. It rained. A lot. So there was no sitting on the deck.
2. Lunch became dinner because I forgot to turn the oven on.
3. In the days leading up to Christmas (because I had nothing else to do to prepare for a sit down lunch for 30 people!!) I cut hundreds of triangles of red and green material and then partway through sewing triangle three, my sewing machine exploded. Literally. Black smoke came out the side and it worked no longer.
I must add that my machine is actually my mums machine. It's well over 35 years old given to my mum by her mum for a belated 21st birthday present as her parents couldn't afford anything at the time. I love the story of this machine and that, in a way, it has passed through three generations. I was devastated by the machine breaking as I wasn't sure if it was repairable and also frustrated at having copious material triangles and nothing I could do with them. So the triangles didn't make an appearance at Christmas, and instead made their way into a box and went to the storage unit with much of my belongings when I packed up my life at the beginning of last year.
Recently when I was sorting through my belongings I found my sewing box (and the triangles) and was determined to finish the bunting. My machine has since come back from the repairers. You'll be happy to know that it was nothing more than the motor burning out which is standard every 15-20 years apparently. The man at the sewing shop is so cute. He knows all the makes and models and ages of the machines and tells me I have a 'beauty' on my hands and that 'they don't make machines like mine anymore'.
So last month, again in the midst of having a thousand other things to do, I started back on my bunting project. I ditched the green triangles in favour of the red ones and sewed until I could sew no longer.
I really should have taken them outside and hung them in the trees to take photos of the finished product, but I really couldn't have been bothered at the end of the process. You'll see I couldn't even be bothered putting things away in my bedroom before taking the photos.

The bunting*
(Now available for party hire ;), as I'm not sure what else to do with it now that it's finished!)
The Christmas (and a bit of the deck on the right) that was missing the bunting decorations

Cute things I saw this morning
1. A young girl getting a dink to school on a bike with her dad. But she got to stand up on the back of the bike and rest her hands on his shoulders. She was wearing cons and stripey coloured socks over her navy blue school tights.
2. A blue-rince nana walking to the letter box in her aqua coloured dressing gown.
3. A postie on a push bike wearing hi-vis yellow vest and hat flap, with ankle guards - head down powering a head as if he was a 6 year old boy trying to win a bmx race to the corner of the block.
4. My lover's face.

Sweet relief
After working 30 of the last 44 hours it only takes something small to make my day.
10:47pm - sitting in a carwash listening to M.I.A. so loudly the car shakes (and not because of the massive rotary sponges smashing the dirt off my car). I love 'Paper planes'.
