- Up early! (tick, I've been in holiday mode for faar toooo long now)
- bike rides, which always make me feel like a kid (bike tour of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn)
- beers in Williamsburg at craft brewery and eating a supremely yummy salad from a cute cute cafe
- riding across the Brooklyn bridge
- watching USA v Ghana game (makeshift broadcast under Manhattan bridge, then in a lingerie waitress bar! hehe)
- meeting lovely new people
- riding safely through hectic new york streets
- wandering through SoHo amidst Saturday afternoon farmers markets and artist fairs
- dinner at our favourite restaurant 'Rice' (There are 3 x Rice restaurants http://www.riceny.com/home.php and we ate at the Nolita one this time) and finding a new dish on the menu which I LOVE (Mexican chicken soup - chicken, avocado, tomato, corn, coriander, lime and chilli)
- playing dress-ups in Patricia Field's dress shop and finding the cutest pair of swimmers (which alas - did not fit me)
- doing a spot of grocery shopping at Wholefoods supermarket on the Lower East Side (OH MY GAWD, this was orgasmic! All produce is organic and/or preservative free and the range they have is jaw dropping. They have fresh produce, aisles of packaged produce, then they have take home dinners, gelato bar, cheese bar, coffee shop...uh.may.zing with a capital U)

Coup du monde
New York has embraced the World Cup. Almost every bar/restaurant/cafe has a big screen showing the games.

Um, not sure if someone told the advertisers that Japan was not in Group D before they printed thousands of posters?

Havaianas were giving out free thongs for the countries playing each fixture. Sadly I didn't go to any of the venues where they were giving them out and therefore do not possess a lovely pair of yellow and green thongs.

Instead I caught most of the games at a huge South African cafe on my street. The atmosphere was electric during the games. Sadly, during the Australia/Germany game there were no other Aussie supporters (nor many German supporters) but even so, the non-German supporters were cheering for Germany. It really was a miserable game to be the sole supporter of the Socceroos.

Brunch before the game. Calm before the storm.

We ventured down to Puma (Poooma) land to check out the World Cup festivities. Pretty much everything was free: screen printing t-shirts, Shoelace art, black and white photo booth strips...
So the Big Sissa and I made some t-shirts. I wanted to get 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie' on the front of my tshirt and 'oi,oi,oi' on the back. But the limit on the lettering was 14 letters - so the guy doing the screen printing made an executive decision to just put 'oi,oi,oi' - thanks buddy! By then the t-shirt was already ugly so I added some extra yellow and green motives for good measure.
Alternatively I wanted to get 'Neill' and his number, but I couldn't for the life of me remember his number. So I asked a girl next to me if she could google it on her iphone. She said it was 12. By that stage I already had my ugly 'oi,oi,oi' t-shirt underway so I didn't go ahead with 'Neill 12'. LUCKY 'cos his number is actually 2!!
The Big Sissa's t-shirt was much cooler and more wearable than mine!
On the way to the Australia v Ghana.
Watched the winning Australia v Serbia game from my couch as I was a supremely hung over being. I was sad that the boys missed out on moving to the next round despite winning the game and playing so well.
Overall - I enjoyed watching Lucas Neill in all his glory. Such a hottie! Now for the remaining games.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade
Once a year New Yorkers flock to Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade along the boardwalk. There were all sorts out and about, and its not hard to see why it's referred to as a Mardi Gras with waves. The costumes were amazing - people really went all out. Coney Island itself is a little tacky and tired. There were vacant lots everywhere and boarded up shops. I imagine it was pretty cute in its day - Old wooden roller coasters, wooden boardwalk, a circus sideshow and arcades. We braved the crowds and this is what we saw...

Indecision
Can't decide what style I am going for with the blog. Will settle when something feels 'right'. This will do for the meantime.

Central Park, JBT... aaand Angus and Julia!
Line ups. Tough life having to chill in the sunshine in a gorgeous park while we waited to get into the venue.
Happy lady to FINALLY have tickets to see Angus and Julia Stone. Never mind that they were only the warm up act to State Radio and John Butler Trio. Last week I was on the subway at around 9pm when I read in a street press mag that A&J were playing that night, starting at that 9pm! I LOVE those guys (I've had them on high rotation on my ipod since I arrived in NYC) so I exited the subway to call the box office. Recorded message. Closed. F*ck. So I caught 3 trains and ran 5 blocks to get to the gig. I ran to the box office counter, and....Sold out. I was so disappointed after making such an effort to get there. When I got home and looked up their other gigs, they were only supporting acts and even then the shows had sold out. Then, the night before the JBT concert I tried for tickets again.. and.. BINGO!
Yep. That's me. One of the first people into the arena.Angus and Julia Stone - My raison d'etre at the concert in the first place.

The lovely Julia.
Happy ladies - front row bandits.
Shortly after this we had a war of elbows with some vacuous, loud, 'american' teenage girls who kept pushing behind us, but nothing that some aggressive dancing and elbows didn't fix ;)
Baaad ass. A slight blip on the radar of an otherwise radical evening!
